In 1610, as part of the Ulster Plantation, Scottish native William Bailie was granted 1,000 acres in the Barony of Clankee by King James I. By 1613, he had established the ‘Manor of Bailieburrow,’ constructing a fortified house known as Bailieborough Castle. This estate became the nucleus around which the town developed.
Initially, thatched houses clustered around the castle’s gates. However, to create a more structured settlement, the town was relocated to its current position, where the old Church of Ireland chapel stands. This move laid the foundation for the Bailieborough we know today.
Now: A Vibrant Community
Fast forward to the 21st century, Bailieborough has blossomed into a thriving town with a population nearing 3,000. While the original castle no longer stands—having been destroyed by fire in the early 20th century—its legacy endures through the Castle Lake Forest. This scenic area offers walking trails that meander through the former castle grounds, allowing visitors to connect with the town’s rich past.
Modern Bailieborough seamlessly blends historical landmarks with contemporary amenities. The town boasts a range of shops, eateries, and cultural sites, all while retaining its unique character and charm.

Standing proudly on Main Street, The Bailie Hotel has been a cornerstone of hospitality for decades. Recently acquired by local businessman Austin Kelly, the hotel has undergone renovations to enhance guest experiences while preserving its historic charm.
